Nails of the Now: Sally Hansen meets Models Own

December 2, 2012

When I’m feeling really festive, I love bright fuchsia. When I’m feeling really super, super festive, nothing will do but GOLD.  With this manicure I’ve combined the two to the maximum extent I can fit them on to my nails. Sally Hansen Insta Dri Magenta Motion (Poundland, £1) and Models Own Disco Inferno (Boots, £5) make a blazing, sparkling combination so bright, I feel like you could see my nails from space! The huge, irregular glitter pieces in the Models Own Disco Inferno are a bit of a pain to apply, because if they end up piled atop one another they’ll flake off easily. If you take your time applying, and add a top coat, this manicure lasts at least 4 days before looking ropey. These pictures were taken on Day 3 I think. Extreme Close Up! This glitter is not for the faint hearted, but for a night out…

Poundland Pick: Sally Hansen Real Nail Polish Strips

sticky nails 024

I picked up four of these fascinating little kits in Poundland last week. Each contains 16 strips of stick-on nail varnish, a nail buffer/file a cuticle stick and a set of clear instructions how to use them. I bought this geometric black and white set and the three below: Super value for a pound each! Do check the packets if you pick up some of these though. My black glittery nail polish strips had half of the strips missing, each pack has two sealed trays of 8 strips each, except that one, which has only one! Grr! 8 strips isn’t enough to do two hands. These graphic designs do look like false nails or stickers, because obviously, this detail of nail-art is difficult with real liquid polish. The other strips I’ve tried look a lot more like nail polish and the chief benefit of them is that they need no…

What Would Bee Buy: Poundland Picks This Week

poundland picks 024

Poundland have some nice cosmetics this week and I didn’t think you’d just want me to tell you about it so I had to buy them so I could show you, yes? Any excuse! There are a couple of different eyeshadow quads from Vita Liberata “Me But Better”. I can’t find out anything about this range online, but they’re pretty colours and nice formulas, excellent for £1 each. I love the colours in this blue/green quad. I couldn’t resist trying out the pinky/mauve one already. The applicator has a brush and a sponge and it seems to be of a nice quality. Do you know anything about this range? I’m wondering if Poundland will have any more of these products – I’ll be looking out for them. Poundland have Revlon nail polishes again. I chose this one – “Princess” which is a pale blue with a very similar formula to “Gold Coin” .…

Nails of the Now: Crackle Metal Glamour

September 4, 2012

nails 021

I didn’t really like crackle nail varnish before this week. I liked it on other people but I didn’t really fancy it on my own nails until I had the brainwave of pairing it with a metallic golden base. I absolutely LOVE this crackle manicure and I can’t stop looking at my nails! I used Revlon “Gold Coin” which is one of my absolute favourite metallic polished because it’s a cool-toned gold that really flatters my cool skin tone. I’ve posted about this polish before  and I really recommend it. I added a clear topcoat, then added the Outdoor Girl Crackle Varnish that I’ve posted about before. This crackle varnish is still available from Poundland for just £1. I sealed the whole lot with Sally Hansen Insta Dri. I left the little fingers on both hands as just gold for contrast, and I like the way it looks. My nails have…

Nails of the Now: Blue Bokeh Spangles – More Poundland Polish

Yes, the above photo is totally out of focus, but look at the bokeh on that! I tried for ages with both my cameras to capture some of what the sparkle of this manicure actually looks like, and fell pretty short. This glitter polish is alive with reflections and multicoloured spangling. It’s impossible to get a good image of. Here are some more tries… For this manicure I applied a base coat of Sally Hansen Double Duty Strengthening Base and Top Coat. My nails have been a bit peely lately and a bit of base coat can help as well as protecting from staining.  I then applied two coats of Sinful Colors Professional Nail Enamel in All Mighty which I picked up in Poundland for just £1. It’s an American import but you can also pick it up from Amazon at about £2.99 a bottle. It’s a lovely rich shade in a nice…

Stila Foundation Sponges at Poundland

August 11, 2012

What’s in the box? High quality sponges are great for applying compact foundation, powder and other products, and decent ones can be pretty expensive, so I was pretty pleased to find these gems at Poundland on Monday. Excellent Photobomb from my handknitted Sackboy above! Each white box contains three boxes of two powder foundation sponges, so that’s six high quality make up sponges for £1! The sponges themselves are packaged in individual plastic packets for hygiene, and when you open it, they feel that mid point between spongey and rubbery which is the nicest texture for applying powder foundation and similar products. Very pleased to find something so useful there – I need to replace the sponges in my MAC compacts and I wasn’t enjoying the prices in stores that sell suitable replacements. I’ll be going back to Poundland for another rummage a.s.a.p! Have you found any good bargains lately?…

Poundland Grab: Sally Hansen Color Quick Nail Pen Silver Chrome

August 8, 2012

Metallic and Chrome nail varnishes are pretty cool, but there’s so much variation in the metallic shininess between products, and I guess it’s a matter of taste how metal you want to actually go. However, if you want your nails to look as metally as old fashioned kitkat foil, I’ve got a pick for you which was only £1! I picked up this little beauty in Poundland on Monday. It’s a nail varnish pen, pump action, fast drying, super chromey I was quite excited to try the “pen” as it sounds like it will be more convenient than a brush, and perhaps good for nail art. It’s not the biggest or smallest brush, definitely not a small, precision size though. It’s quite a small amount of product (4ml – like a “mini” polish size) and it’s a bit of a pain to get the colour flowing and running smoothly. I…

Bee Loves… The Internet!

In a change to our scheduled programming, I’m going to bring you some things from the internet that I have enjoyed lately! I will bring you beauty stuff tomorrow, deal? 1. Being Awesome On The Internet It may be impossible for some to remember a time when it wasn’t cool to like Wil Wheaton. For some of you it may be impossible to remember who he is but since he used to be in Star Trek and has been promoted to a sort of unofficial mayor of certain territories of the internet, if you’re even a little bit geeky, you’ll know who I mean. Well, as long ago as it was, readers, I do remember a time when it was a little bit less cool to like him, but there I was, in 1992, liking him anyway. As a 12 year old kid (and an 11 year old, 10 year…

Beautiful Bargain Brow Kit: Vital Radiance

June 6, 2012
By
DSC_0754

I first bought myself a Vital Radiance Brow Fill In Powder kit about 8 years ago (… that long? Whoa) . Back in those days of bargain hunting and having important beers to spend my student loan on rather than expensive makeup, the Vital Radiance products were a brilliant bargain find. Vital Radiance is an American brand, it’s a Revlon diffusion line for mature skin. It has cheaper price points, more specifically targeted products, nothing wild or bright, just gentle natural colours and soft feeling formulas. I don’t know if it is still in production or current, but they must have way, waaaay overstocked these things a few years ago because every Poundland and Savers and local discount store stocked the line for ages at £1 – £2 an item.  I gave the products a try because I reasoned, well… if these things make a lady in her seventies look vitally radiant they’re…

Poundland Nail Varnish Picks

May 5, 2012

pics friday 004

Poundland keeps on getting awesome nail varnishes imported from the US and I just can’t resist them. It’s a good thing they’re just £1 or this could become a problem… Last week I picked up two Sally Hansen Salon Nail Lacquer in Berry Sweet and Revlon Nail Enamel in 799 Plum Night. Not a brilliant pic I’m afraid, I hope it shows you something of the colour and the shine. This is a beautiful soft deep berry pink which is both a strong colour and infinitely grown up and work appropriate. It’s opaque in 1-2 coats and lasts reasonably well. Here it is again, let’s call this photo “arty” because it’s not very good but I really like it! The colour is truest here.   The second bargain polish is the Revlon Plum Night It’s such a deep dark blue purple as to be almost black but it’s not black. It’s…
