Nails of the Now: NYC Madison Avenue

If there’s any shade that a line of cosmetics would be incomplete without, it’s a super-bright red that leans to pink but is still red. Like the quintessential Revlon Red it’s one of those colours that make up is all about. This nail varnish is New York Colour’s take on this shade, and they’ve named it “Madison Avenue” which I think is kind of a perfect name for the colour This is a really rocking red shade that is eyecatching and bold. What I really like about it is that it appears simple and just red but when you look closely it has tiny flecks of glittery shimmer in it. The reason this is a great thing is that I find that flat/creme red shades make my already big nails look weirdly big but a tiny bit of sparkle seems to visually slim and dainty them up. It’s almost totally opaque with two…

Nails of the Now: NYC Expert Last Late Night Latte

I like the names of the NYC cosmetics, and I like the colour range and I like the prices. I think they’re pretty funky for a value brand. I’ve yet to find an indispensible product in their range but they have a lot of nice, wearable things to try out. Like the other shade I bought “Rosy Knows”  this nail polish is in the Expert Last range claiming to last up to 7 days. Like the other shade I bought, I don’t think 7 days is realistic for this polish. Wear  can be extended with something like Sally Hansen Insta Dri Top Coat which I love! Without it, it wears like a regular, not-very-long-wear polish. That aside, what’s it like? It’s a pearly, shiny neutral champagne beige shade that looks paler on the nail than in the bottle and dries sheer-but opaque after two coats. I like this look, it’s a pearly…

Not Quite 7 Day Nails

February 22, 2012

Well… I pledged to give my NYC Expert Last a chance to live up to it’s 7 Day claim… this is what happened 1. Saturday, applied carefully.. looked awesome 2. Sunday, a few tiny chips appeared at the corners of the ends of the nails. Subtle, not a dealbreaker 3. Monday, polish started to wear off the nail tips, bigger chips chipped off. Started looking a bit ropey really. 4. Tuesday, More than ropey looking, every nail chipped and worn looking, spent whole day wanting to sit on my hands. Tuesday evening: took the pictures for this post, whipped the polish off enthusiastically! I make that reasonably presentable nails from Saturday lunchtime to Monday lunchtime.. 48 hours. So… what went wrong? I love the colour of this polish and I really enjoyed wearing it before it started looking a bit tired. I know I could get a good couple more days…

New York Colour Expert Last Nail Polish Review

Remember to enter my giveaway to win a gorgeous Clarins Blush Prodige!   Yesterday lunchtime I was wondering what things to share with you this weekend, I was in Superdrug and I spotted that this nail varnish I’ve had my eye on for a while is now on offer at 2 for £2.99 (usually £2.49 each). After a stressful work week, my nail varnish resistance was at an all time low! I grabbed the deep pink “200 Rosy Knows” I’d been wanting and also the  nude shade “215 Late Night Latte”. Expert Last promises up to 7 days wear and up to 50% stronger nails. The deep pink shade “Rosy Knows” is a little darker than it appears in the first photo – more like in this darker image (above). Oddly my camera, which failed to find the pink tones in the Collection 2000 polish last week has struggled to…

I wrote a song, I wrote a song for you…

…and it was called Yellow.   This post was supposed to be a review of Chanel Perfection Lumiere foundation but instead it’s going to be a lesson about how important it is to check shade matches in natural light before taking an foundation home! The Chanel lady selected my shade sample and presented it in this cute glossy card along with some information postcards and a helpful note of her number in case of any queries. Since I didn’t buy anything and I’ve never been there before, I thought this was pretty good service. She spent a good few minutes explaining to me and my friend how to get the best out of the product. Don’t apply it with a brush, it needs to be warmed and blended in with fingers for the best appearance. Our back of hand swatches looked amazing.   Click to continue reading to see how…

Free is my favourite price, Beauty freebies this weekend!

I’ve had a great time picking up freebies lately, I thought I should give you a heads up in case you want to catch these before they’re gone…   I can’t find it properly advertised on line but the Clinique Mascara Swap is still on at Boots this weekend. This is a fun deal because you get to dig out your oldest and most icky mascara and drop it in a huge bowl of old icky mascaras and they give you a shiny new half size one in your choice of lengthening or volumising formulas I chose the high impact one, which is volumising. I’ll try it out and let you know how it goes.   Lancome counters are doing a 7 day trial size of Teint Idole Ultra 24H foundation . It comes in 18 shades and they invite you to guess your shade and then get colour matched. I’m…

Nails of the day: Never Say Die Fuchsia

It’s been a brilliant festive holiday with today the last day before returning to work tomorrow. I needed to paint my nails a work friendly shade which is in keeping with my HOLIDAYS FOREVER, NEVER GO TO WORK AGAIN mood!  I reached for my New York Colour “In a New York Minute Quick Dry Nail Polish” in 268 Fashion Ave Fuchsia (£1.79 at Superdrug). I was taking photos of it to show you when I remembered what happened last time I did some nail pics, which resulted in this little gem of an image from my friend and fellow blogger Daisy . Click below to continue reading this post and find out what we’re on about…
