Fifty Shades of Grey: Shopping

June 27, 2012

If I know my readers at all, I can be pretty sure that the Naughty-Book-Kindle-Download-sensation that is Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L James has not escaped your notice! Love it or loathe it, it is most definitely a thing. Like The Secretary before it, it’s going to end up being a byword for sexiness and it’s going to creep into our daily lives, kindles and underwear drawers… oh yes I haven’t got around to reading it yet, too busy writing blog posts for you guys. However, I have gotten around to wondering, as I shopped, if perhaps it hasn’t snuck into my mind another way. I bought myself a grey suit, a grey sweater, grey eyeshadow, a grey lacy bra… oh my god, the power of suggestion! Perhaps it is the weather (grey) perhaps it is the book, perhaps the zeitgeist is just in a grey zone at the moment, I don’t…

Nails of the Now: Primrose and Taupe

June 26, 2012

I’ve been thinking about this colour combination for my nails for a while now, though I didn’t have the nail colours in my collection to make it happen.  When I saw the Leighton Denny nail polish free with Harpers Bazaar magazine I grabbed it. I haven’t used Leighton Denny products before, and this shade “Supermodel” is the taupe that has been missing from my set of “nude-ish” shades I’ve been collecting this season. Forgive the slightly arty look of these shots, it was very lovely high-contrast morning light when I took these I like these shades together. The bright yellow is not quite neon so it’s a more wearable take on the “neons and nudes” trend that really caught my eye earlier in the season. I really love the quality of the Leighton Denny polish, it’s easy to apply with a professional finish. The Barry M yellow ” NP 307…

Lancôme Icons Gift With Purchase

June 24, 2012

I was hoping to be able to bring you this post at the beginning of June, but between finishing my old job, getting a (squee!) new job, getting a flat, packing up, argh… I haven’t done a beauty counter run since May! Hard to believe for me I’ve been dying to get my hands on this Lancôme Gift With Purchase and I was lucky enough that my lovely Lancôme ladies at Boots Truro had one to give me although it was the last official day of the offer. There is a rumour that it might be extended so I recommend asking at your Lancôme counter to see if it is, it’s definitely a good one if you get the chance to get it. It comes in a really gorgeous little purse/cosmetic bag with a design by Jenny Packham. My photo doesn’t really do it justice, there’s a nice picture of it on the…

Palette Lust – Sleek MakeUP 2012 Glory Palette

Palette Lust – Sleek MakeUP 2012 Glory Palette

There are millions of palettes out there, the best known lately are probably the Urban Decay Naked and Naked 2 palettes, but there really are loads now and I’ll admit it’s possible to experience a palette overdose, palette weariness, palette I’m-So-Over-It-itis. I would have thought I had a case of that myself, but then I saw the Sleek Glory Palette featured on Dolce Vanity.   Image source Look at the colours! The colours! I love every one! There are even better pictures and swatches on the Dolce Vanity post so I really recommend having a look there. That’s an AMAZING red, an INCREDIBLE yellow, fantastic blues and pink. I’d use every scrap of them and the pale neutrals are exactly the ones I use most in other palettes, all together in one. This is a Limited Edition tie-in with the Olympics and well, I don’t know about you guys but…

Benefit Erase Paste – How do YOU do it?

Hi guys! Frequent readers of my posts will probably know that I love my concealers. It sometimes seems that faced with the possibility of freedom from my dark under eye circles, all sense flies out the window and I will be game to throw £20 notes at the problem ad absurdum. I’ve tried concealers by MAC, L’Oreal, Collection 2000, The Body Shop, No.7,  Benefit, Rimmel, many more, even the fabled Touche Eclat highlighter has graced my eye sockets. I kinda love ALL concealers, rich or poor, great and small. You’re all my little pigmented soldiers, fighting the good fight. Some I love more than others though, and not always the most expensive at that. My Collection 2000 Lasting Perfection, for example, punches far above its weight and is the best texture to blend with my foundation and almost invisibly camouflage my dark areas. That’s not to say it’s the only…

Nails of the Now: Barry M Chameleon

Imagine a pretty nail polish, bright, opaque, almost matte, metallic, lovely… See it sparkle, sheen and shimmer in the light… “This is jolly lovely nail polish”, you might think to yourself, really wonderful for £3.99, what clever folk these Barry M people are! Then you might think to youself, “perhaps I’ll add a clear top coat to this lovely polish, that might look nice…” WHAT’S HAPPENING HERE??? It’s true, guys! Adding a clear top coat to this polish (in spots, above, or however you like) turns the polish from a metallic blue to a sheer shiny purple. Dead amaze! How cool is that? The transformation happens quickly and the colours are nicely different to each other but they go together. I’ve tried a few things here (above) as you can see, I need a steadier hand and a bit more practice, but this look has so much potential. A skinny…

Face Of The Day: Go Drag or Go Home ;)

June 17, 2012

DSC_0753

I’ve been on my own at home for a week now, and I don’t mind telling you, I’ve gone a little strange. Yesterday I decided to dig out some of my brightest eyeshadows and try out a big BIG eye look that would frighten me whenever I caught my reflection in  the mirror for the rest of the day Drag make-up doesn’t come naturally to me, even if I try to channel Annie Lennox while wielding my eyeshadow brush. I’m pretty sure the reason for this is that men’s facial features are, in general, pretty big. My facial features are undeniably pretty small (Eddie Izzard, how I envy you!) giving me a smaller space to fit in all those dramatic curves and highlights a proper show-off eye demands. Given an endless afternoon of nothing to do, I thought I’d give it a shot anyway I only “overdid” the eyes for…

Nails of the Now: Barry M Retro Nail Paint

June 17, 2012

DSC_0702

I was wandering around my local Superdrug on Thursday and I spied this little freebie upon the Barry M stand. Retro Nail Paint in “Retro 2 Blue”. These “Retro” products have been released to celebrate Barry M’s 30 years of making cosmetics, and you can get one free with any £6 spend or buy them individually for £2.99 each. In the store I visited there were two other  colour options, a red and a fuchsia  pink, both with that superb metallic-finish-car-paint shimmer deep within like this blue. I always forget what a reasonably priced range Barry M products are because the quality is so good.  Although the shape of the bottle differs from the standard Barry M nail paints, the quality is the same as the best of the other shades like Racing Green and Black. The bottle recommends using a base coat with this polish and I’ve done so,…

Guest Post: Pink Eyeshadow Review For Goths!

June 16, 2012

2012-05-13 14.09.04

I’m delighted to bring you another guest post from my beloved friend Lana, who has previously written about Gosh Nail Lacquer in Purple Heart on this blog. I hope you enjoy it! I’ll be back with more posts soon xxx Pink, the colour usually sneered upon as a fluffy girly colour that is not to be put any where near the personal bubble of any respectable goth anywhere let alone on one’s face. Or, so we are led to believe and this is the way I’ve always viewed the colour pink, short of hot cerise pink I have hated it and scorned it and banished it from my wardrobe, it’s the colour that I attribute to my sister and my soul is too dark and broody for it, or so I thought. So, when Bee suggested that pink was the new goth I was dubious, but knowing how ‘well goff’ she actually is I was…
