Nails of the Now: NYC Expert Last Late Night Latte

I like the names of the NYC cosmetics, and I like the colour range and I like the prices. I think they’re pretty funky for a value brand. I’ve yet to find an indispensible product in their range but they have a lot of nice, wearable things to try out. Like the other shade I bought “Rosy Knows”  this nail polish is in the Expert Last range claiming to last up to 7 days. Like the other shade I bought, I don’t think 7 days is realistic for this polish. Wear  can be extended with something like Sally Hansen Insta Dri Top Coat which I love! Without it, it wears like a regular, not-very-long-wear polish. That aside, what’s it like? It’s a pearly, shiny neutral champagne beige shade that looks paler on the nail than in the bottle and dries sheer-but opaque after two coats. I like this look, it’s a pearly…

Review: Benefit Triple Performing Facial Emulsion

When I went to my local Benefit counter to try out the Oxygen Wow Foundation the Benefit lady used this product on me and sent me home with this sample to try out. When she put the product on me my skin felt good and it smelled great but it is hard to tell how good  a moisturiser is when applied at a counter chair along with cleansers, primers, foundation and all sorts. I didn’t think much about this little sachet until I was travelling last week on a househunting trip and brought it along as it is just the right size for a few days away (I love samples for this!). As I mention on here all the time I have mostly dry skin and find that oil is my friend in skincare. Way back in my teen days I’d tried oil free moisturisers to dry and crackly skin effects, so I…

Normal service will… never be quite the same again! Lanolips Review

So.. all this absenteeism probably deserves an explanation, going from daily posting, to every other day, to… where’s Bee??? Well, life just got super busy as it’s been completely turned upside down in the past couple of weeks, so I’m going to beg for patience and understanding until I get daily blogging time back.  It’s all in aid of the very exciting news that Beloved Boyfriend has a new job! And it’s hundreds of miles away in Oxford! And we’re moving! In just a few weeks! Panic! It’s so exciting and brilliant. I can’t wait to leave sleepy Cornwall behind for a while and get to know a town I’ve barely been to, and it will be amazing to be in day trip distance  of London again. I’m looking forward to going to blogging events and beauty events too. This is definitely going to mean bigger and better blogging in…

Benefit “They’re Real!” Mascara Review

A few weeks ago I was very kindly gifted a tube of Benefit They’re Real Mascara by Katie of  HerPretty.com . I didn’t know what to expect as I knew there was a lot of hype and anticipation about this product, but I’d also read a story of woe from one blogger who had a reaction to the product and returned it in despair. Undaunted (of course!) I tried it anyway It’s got one of those short-bristled rubbery brushes with the sexy nobbly end bit. The formula is thick, deep black and fast drying on my lashes. From the first use, through several weeks until now, I love this product! It’s a brilliant mascara. It’s so deep and black and ballsy. It does mad sexy things to my lashes effortlessly and stays on until I want to remove it. It is genuinely a cut above other mascaras and has me catching…

New Thing of the Now: Oily Cleansing

I’ve only owned and used any premium skin care products in the last year. Before that I’d shopped along quite happily with bargain ranges and the occasional treat if there was a gift set with a No.7 moisturiser or something. I don’t know how much I thought about premium skincare really, but I did think that, if there was one product it was probably worth Going Premium for, it was moisturiser, or maybe serum.  Cleansing didn’t come into it. I want to Put Things On Me not Take Things Off Me! Especially when paying money! But I didn’t know, I didn’t expect, I was wide open to be blindsided on this one. Great cleansers are amazing! I had no idea what I was missing. I didn’t often got to bed with my make up on, but if I ever did, it was because I couldn’t face the sore discomfort of the…

Face of the Day: New hair day

Hi guys! Sorry I’ve been a bit quiet, I’ve been off having a cold and laying up in bed, started reading The Hunger Games and really enjoying it too. As frequently happens when I’m ill, and when I’m not ill to be honest, I’ve changed my hair colour! I wanted to go for something much lighter than I had, but that could be conceivably a natural human hair colour, not the ribena-berries shades that I’ve gone for lately. I lightened it with cream lightener then added two different brown colours to give it the shade I wanted. Oh so time consuming but worth it! I realise looking at these shots that I was a bit quick off the bat and should have taken the time to smooth down the post dye frizzies with some serum or Argan oil, so unfortunately this is the hair in its raw rough-dried form rather than the…

Nails of the Now: Nails Inc Bluebell

May 6, 2012

I was pretty eager to try this since my passionate declaration of love for InStyle magazine yesterday, this is one of the three shades of nail polish that are free with this months issue. It’s a pale purple-tinged pastel blue, sightly more violet than is picked up in these pictures. It’s quite a thick  consistency nail polish, opaque in one coat but you need two for a perfect finish. I’ve ended up with several Nails Inc polishes from magazines and this is definitely my favourite so far. I really like the shiny finish. It’s also the easiest to apply of the Nails Inc polishes I have, like the MUA polishes I reviewed you can just apply it fairly quickly and it sort of magically evens itself out. Much better than the MUA polishes, the brush is fine. Not earthshatteringly great but nothing wrong with it, a decent brush. I have ended…

Magazine Love: Instyle

May 5, 2012

pics friday 030

I picked up Instyle magazine on Thursday and thanks to the conspiracy of cold virus germs laying me up on the sofa for many hours, I had a good chance to devour it thoroughly It’s a new sort of rule  for my magazine purchases that I’m only buying ones with something free with them that I could protentially blog about. It’s not much of a restriction as nearly every magazine has something free stuck to it AND I actually don’t really like posting about the same product that everyone else is posting about that day because it smacks of a lack of imagination on my part. However, I really do love magazines so there needs to be some rules and this is one! So I justified picking up Instyle because of the free Nails Inc Polish that came with it. Of the three colours I chose “Bluebell” as I don’t have a…

Poundland Nail Varnish Picks

May 5, 2012

Poundland keeps on getting awesome nail varnishes imported from the US and I just can’t resist them. It’s a good thing they’re just £1 or this could become a problem… Last week I picked up two Sally Hansen Salon Nail Lacquer in Berry Sweet and Revlon Nail Enamel in 799 Plum Night. Not a brilliant pic I’m afraid, I hope it shows you something of the colour and the shine. This is a beautiful soft deep berry pink which is both a strong colour and infinitely grown up and work appropriate. It’s opaque in 1-2 coats and lasts reasonably well. Here it is again, let’s call this photo “arty” because it’s not very good but I really like it! The colour is truest here.   The second bargain polish is the Revlon Plum Night It’s such a deep dark blue purple as to be almost black but it’s not black. It’s…
