Beauty UK Matte Top Coat

Matte nails is something that seemed to just suddenly exist. I’d never heard of it, never imagined it, until about two months ago and then it was a thing, matte nails: BAM. Like crackle polish and all the holo/glitter/flashy top coats and the newly available foils that seem to be cropping up, it seems to be a coalescence of an advance in manicure cosmetic technology and a trend for differenty-ness at the end of fingers. I’ve a suspicion that the “technology” behind matte polish has probably existed forever but probably didn’t appeal to anyone until now. It might be having a moment in the spotlight that could end up being short lived, so if you truly love matte polish, grab a decent supply as it might be a bit of a seasonal thing. After the lovely Daisy contributed some excellent pictures of matte nails in action I thought I might like…

Nails of the Day: Famous Golden Plum

I don’t know anything about the Famous by Sue Moxley brand except it is one of the stands at my local Superdrug. Perhaps 6 months or more ago, all the items in the range were reduced to half price for ages, and I was pretty sure the brand was on the way out. However, the prices have returned to normal and the stand remains, so perhaps I was premature there. A few months ago while they were half price I picked up a couple of their nail polishes. This is no.6 Golden Plum. This is a brilliant polish. Fast drying and opaque, it has a subtle shine and subtle gold sparkle within which is barely there but luxurious looking. My favourite thing about it is it has a professional finish in roughly 1.5 coats, I apply one coat and then touch up any nails that need it rather than having…

Saturday FOTD: Vintage with a blue twist

When my very stylish author friend Jo invited me to join her on a shopping trip yesterday, I knew my usual grungey jeans and boots weren’t going to cut it. I reached for my genuine 1980′s vintage  dress (still a hilarious concept for a 1980 baby like myself) and decided to put together a vintage inspired look with an Urban Decay twist… Products I’ve used for this Face Of The Day: Clarins Extra Firming Foundation in105 Nude MAC Studio Sculpt Concealer inNW20 Sleek Blush in Life’s A Peach No.7 Eye Pencil in Brown (Brows) Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion Original Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Skimp Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Blue Bus Urban Decay 24/7 Liquid Liner in Perversion Urban Decay Supercurl Curling Mascara L’Oreal Contour Parfait Lip Liner in Cappuccino Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Candy Gloss Weekends mean: precious daylight for photos! I’ve been testing out Clarins Extra…

Wantables – lovely beauty things

Something I love about beauty products is the detail. Sometimes products aren’t just appealing formulas to put on your skin,  but they’re nice objects as well. Something you buy to use often, to touch and hold it, it’s so much nicer when it looks and feels good too. This is definitely a consideration for my friends who buy a lot of premium cosmetics. You don’t want to reach into your designer handbag and pull out a cruddy lipgloss with the label peeling off, right? It’s not only premium brands that have gorgeous and sexy packaging though. Like the blusher from Sleek Cosmetics in “Life’s a Peach”. It was love at first sight when I saw it in Superdrug last week. I’d been pining for the discontinued Urban Decay blush in “Score” when i spotted it and given that it was only £4.19 and oh_so_beautiful I just couldn’t leave it there.…

Free is my favourite price, Beauty freebies this weekend!

Free is my favourite price, Beauty freebies this weekend!

I’ve had a great time picking up freebies lately, I thought I should give you a heads up in case you want to catch these before they’re gone…   I can’t find it properly advertised on line but the Clinique Mascara Swap is still on at Boots this weekend. This is a fun deal because you get to dig out your oldest and most icky mascara and drop it in a huge bowl of old icky mascaras and they give you a shiny new half size one in your choice of lengthening or volumising formulas I chose the high impact one, which is volumising. I’ll try it out and let you know how it goes.   Lancome counters are doing a 7 day trial size of Teint Idole Ultra 24H foundation . It comes in 18 shades and they invite you to guess your shade and then get colour matched. I’m…

For the love of Last Call

Hi Guys! I’ve been discovering this week that having a full time job and doing research for my blog leaves me with very little time to write my actual blog. I’m dreaming of a day when I can spend more of my life doing this and less of my life working in a finance office! Things have been very busy at work this week and it’s been a bit stressful. I find that weeks like that are the times that I actually value my beauty routine most. Along with my 45 minute walk to work, getting ready in the morning is a really calming ritual. It’s kind of a collaboration between my hands and my eyes leaving the “clever” part of my brain free to relax and become centered. It takes a few minutes but I get up in time and I think it’s really worth it. After writing rhapsodies on…

Nails of the Day: Devils Delight

Nails of the Day: Devils Delight

Boots are giving away a £5 No.7 voucher when you spend £5 in store at the moment. No.7 aren’t my favourite cosmetic brand, but their quality is good and it’s hard to resist when you’re holding a whole-free-fiver in your hands, right? Usually when they have this offer on I end up with at least one of their nail polishes. Normally £7, with the voucher they’re just £2. This time I picked up Stay Perfect 190 “Devils Delight” . It’s a really nice colour, unusual in that it is a real “Coca Cola” red. I think it looks nice on. I didn’t wear it long enough to comment on it’s long-wearing characteristics but it did dry quickly with a very glossy finish. Click to continue reading for a few more notes and pics

Outdoor Girl Crackle Polish

So… after that blurry preview I decided to give the Crackle Polish a quick run around to see how it really works. This is the rather odd looking packaging – definitely stands out from the rest of my nail polishes as “differenty”. It’s plastic rather than the standard glass, which is weird. The bottle feels slightly squeezable. I guess if your prices are rock bottom, plastic nail varnish pots make sense? Ok. Even in plastic this guy is set to last me 12 months? I think that’s reasonable.  Click to continue reading and see how it works…

Saturday Face of The Day – Boho Bronze

Saturday is a great day for getting a cosmetic groove on, plenty of time to get ready, no work people to look at you askew if you apply the eyeliner with a firehose, ladies at make up counters to talk to and baristas to smile at, Saturday is lookin’ good day. So yesterday I finally gave my eyebrows a tidy up and decided to go with a bit of a boho make up look for my mooch around town. I used these products: Benefit Stay Don’t Stray Primer MAC Prep & Prime SPF50 Face Protect MAC Studio Fix Powder Foundation in NW20 MAC Studio Sculpt Concealer in NW20 Cosmopolitan Eyebrow Kit No7. Eye Pencil in Brown (Brows) Urban Decay Eye Shadow in Lost (Brows) Urban Decay Primer Potion Original Urban Decay Eye Shadow in Skimp (browbone/highlight) Urban Decay Eye Shadow in Baked (lid) Urban Decay Eye Shadow in  Midnight Cowgirl (inner…

Primer fail? I want satisfaction, not separation

Primer fail? I want satisfaction, not separation

There’s something very untoward going on in my make-up bag, I don’t like this at all. The primers in my kit are almost the most expensive items in there. I didn’t set out to splurge huge quids on primers. I’d tried cheap ones which didn’t seem to do anything for me, then I had a couple of makeovers – one Benefit and one MAC, and they used primers on me from their ranges and I was like “Booya! That DOES things!!”  so I was relatively confident handing over all my pocket money to purchase them. First up is Benefit Stay Don’t Stray eye make up primer £19.50 from Boots. I really love this product and I use it almost every day on my dark circles. I’ve been using it for about 6 months. One day a couple of months ago I noticed something when I was pumping it. Look at this…
